November 24, 1997

The 1997 World Bank Annual Report is in the "international resources" section of the Journals & Magazines page and the "general reference" section of the Reference page.
Election results and calendars for more than 20 countries in Latin America are now on the Government page.
Ever live in Puerto Padre, Cuba? This site provides historical background of the municipality and helps former residents stay in touch.
The searchable white pages for Puerto Rico are on the country page and the Reference page.
New to the Journals & Magazines page are:
- Revista de Biologia Tropical and Planet Surf Magazine in Costa Rica;
- A Priori revista juridica de Brazil;
- From Argentina, Churrasco popular culture zine, and for the business-minded: Empresa & Medio Ambiente, Impronta and in Peru, Avance Economica.

The Military page has a number of new and important links to announce, inlcuding new sections for Peru and Nicaragua and a link to Nicaragua's Codigo Militar.

The Economy page has new connections:
- In the Country Resources section have been added links to a Center of Applied Economics of the University of Chile and to the Chile Information Project, the latter containing a big amount of economic information about this country.
- In the News section there are several new links to sources of economic information from Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru.

Astronomy buffs in Latin America may now link to the following sites on the Science page:
- In Chile, visit the Cerro Tololo, Las Campanas, Las Sillas, and VLT observatories. Also see the Gemini 8-meter Telescopes Project, a cooperative effort by several countries;
- Views of the Solar System in Spanish, Portuguese and English;
- A wealth of links in Astronomical Community Links and Links to Astronomy Pages and Sites;
- Also new to the Science page are links to chemistry associations and search engines in Brazil.

New to the Reference page are the Bolivian e-mail guide for nationals and ex-pats as well as the Guatemala Yellow Pages.

A number of regional resources have been added to the Statistics page including:
- a Database on NGO's in Central America
- selected statistics on Central America
- an index of government publications
- a directory of links Latin American statistical sources.
- New to the Trade page are the Latin American Newsletter under Trade News and the U.S. Department of State's Economic Policy and Trade Practices Report 1996 under Western Hemispheric Resources.

The Sports page has three new links to the Club Atletico River Plate, one of Argentina's premiere squads, Uruguay's Club Nacional de Futbol, and the Seleccion Mexicana de Futbol, which is on its way to the World Cup in France.
A new link to the Diario La Hora, located on Isla Margarita in Venezuela, is new to the Newspapers section.
Paraguay has a number of new links to announce, including:
- Quanta Net, an Internet Service Provider;
- The International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES);
- Tribunal Superior de Justicia Electoral; and
- Policia Nacional de Paraguay
The Health page has a new link in the Brazil section to DoctorSite, a guidebook for health and well-being.

UT-LANIC and The Institute of Latin American Studies are pleased to announce the release of ENLACE, the Electronic Network for Latin American Careers and Employment.
The ENLACE Career Center is the first-of-its-kind job databank on the Internet created and tailored specifically for job seekers and employers in Latin America or with a Latin American focus. Job seekers can post their resume on-line and search current job postings with a click of a button. Similarly, employers can post job openings and search for candidates in a wide range of professions. The job and resume databases are fully searchable, easy to use and updated daily. As this is a new service, it is offered free of charge to both job seekers and employers. ENLACE invites you to help make this service grow for the benefit of the Latin American and international professional community.
On the Music page, you will now find the following resources: Latin Music, in the Caribbean section, traces the salsa and mambo from Africa to New York. A site devoted to Liuba Maria Hevia explores the life, music and influences of this contemporary singer and composer from Cuba. The index and subscription information for the Revista Musical Chilena is is the Chile section. In Peru, you will now find a selection of Music Samples, as well as sites on the Huayno Music of Peru and the Wayanay Inka group (with background information on Incan history and culture). Finally, a Spanish-language bibliography of Jamaican singer and composer Bob Marley now appears in the Other Countries section.
The African Diaspora in Latin America page now includes the Organization of Africans in the Americas, a multi-lingual website offering articles on race issues in Latin America as well as an Inter-American chat session. In the set of Caribbean links, there is now a Spanish-language page recounting the Spanish colonization of Colombia, Venezuela and the Caribbean. The 5th Afro-Brazilian Congress, organized by the Organization of Africans in the Americas (OAA) in 1997, appears in the Brazil section, and includes five full-text articles. The Honduras section includes a multi-ethnic history entitled "Origen de la poblacion de Honduras", and the International Resources section offers "Slavery and Anti-Slavery: A Bibliography of Recent Works in English".
The Development page now includes "Urbanization in Latin America", a World Food Issues group project completed in April of 1996.

November 15, 1997

In the Literature page:
- More additions to the Latin American poetry in LANIC. There are new poems of Pablo Neruda (Chile), Mario Benedetti (Uruguay), Octavio Paz (Mexico) y Carlos Mauricio Iriarte (Colombia).
- Two new links about the work and life of Alfredo Bryce Echenique, in the Peru section.

New resources for economic data and doing business in Bolivia, Colombia and Costa Rica have been added to the Trade, Business and Statistics pages.

Several new links are on the Puerto Rico page:
- The Senate of Puerto Rico; (the House is not yet on line)
- A biography of Gov. Rosselló;
- Puerto Rico Bar Association (Colegio de Abogados);
- The Biblioteca Virtual of Puerto Rico; an extensive list of links;
- The Puerto Rico Telephone Company, which is currently up for sale; and
- A page dedicated to the late nationalist Pedro Albizu Campos;

The K-12 Education page has the following new resources: Books Without Borders, A Foreign Language Bookstore for Children, in Latin American & Bilingual Resources. Monteiro Lobato, a site dedicated to the life and work of this much-loved writer of children's literature, in Brazil. Mexican Home Remedies, and Preparatoria 15, in Mexico. Amazon Tales: Voices from the Ecuadorian Amazon, in Other Countries and A Teacher's Guide to Folklife Resources for K-12 Classrooms, in International Resources.
The Human Rights page has new links to: El Servicio Diario de Informacion de Derechos Humanos, from Mexico, the League of United Latin American Citizens (in the Other Countries section) and The Cultural Center for Development and Promotion of Peace, Human Rights and Democracy, with a selection of Documents on Colombia.
The Latin American Resources section of the Development page now includes El Mercosur y la Sociedad Civil, and the International Development Research Centre: Social Development Projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. The WWW Virtual Library's collection of Inter- and Supranational Organization Sources has been added to the International Resources section of this page.
The Fernand Braudel Institute of World Economics (in English and Portuguese) and the Banco Central do Brasil will now be found in the Economy & Finance section of the Brazil page.

In the Literature page you can access a lot of new links:
- There is a new Uruguay country section, including the works of Eduardo Galeano and Mario Benedetti.
- In the Peru section there is a connection to the Mario Vargas Llosa Papers recollected by the Princeton University, and links to stories of Vargas Llosa and Alfredo Bryce Echenique.
- In the Argentina section there are direct connections to the works of Ernesto Sabato, Leopoldo Marechal and Osvaldo Soriano.
- In the Chile section there are links to the poetry of Nicanor Parra and Jorge Teillier.
- In a new Guatemala country section you can access the works of Augusto Monterroso, Miguel Angel Asturias, and the ancient Popol Vuh.
- In the Cuba section there is a connection to the poems of Dulce Maria Loynaz.
- In the Colombia section, now you can find the works of Alvaro Mutis, Jorge Isaacs, Jose Asuncion Silva and a very suggestive 'Manual para ser Ninos' written by Garcia Marquez.

More additions in the Labor page:
- In the Country Resources sections there are new links to labor organizations in Brazil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Peru y Uruguay.

Our new links to the Barbados page will let you e-mail a calypso artist through the Bajan Calypso Barn or read news bulletins from the Caribbean News Agency and the Broad Street Journal. Other new links include:

The Trade page offers new resources on ALADI, the Andean Pact, the Caribbean Common Market (CARICOM), the Free Trade Area of the Americas negotiations (FTAA) and the GATT.
The Business and Finance page has been updated with several resources for Ecuador including the Banco Central de Ecuador and Ecuador Commerce. Additional updates include new links for Brazil, such as the Bolsa de Valores de Sao Paulo and the Bolsa de Valores do Rio de Janeiro, and for Argentina, including Investment Opportunities in Argentina by the Secretariat for Commerce and Investment.

UT- LANIC's Bolivia page continues to grow. New links include:

The Publishers & Bookdealers page now has a new section on Children's Books in Latin America, including links to several Brazilian sites. For recommended readings, visit California State University's Center for the Study of Books in Spanish for Children and Adolescents, which has an expanded bibliography.

New to the Reference page is a link to the Scholarly Societies Project, which keeps a regularly updated list of international research organizations.
