Jean-Bertrand Aristide won the Haitian presidential election with 91% of the vote. Voter turnout was estimated at 61.5%. No major opposition parties participted in the election, while other opposition candidates did not campaign due to fear of political violence. The United States has shifted aid to private organizations because concerns about electoral irregularities from the previous legislative election were not resolved.
