Call for Papers
The Fourth International Conference on the Americas
"Toward the Year 2000: Points of Convergence in the Americas"

Presented by the University of South Florida
January 28-31, 1998
Tampa, Florida USA

Conference Purpose
The Conference will bring together scholars to examine current and
historical trends in the growth and development of the Americas from
a multi-disciplinary perspective. Tampa's large Hispanic/Latino
community, one of the oldest in the United States, and its
geographical proximity to Latin America and the Caribbean provide the
University of South Florida with a unique opportunity to become a
point of convergence in the development of academic knowledge which
is culturally meaningful to, and which responds to, current
globalizing economic and migratory trends which affect many issues.

Theme and Suggested Issues/Topics
Papers which address the following suggested issues/topics within the
Conference theme, "Toward the Year 2000: Points of Convergence in
the Americas," are invited:
* Comparative Education
* Arts/Culture/Language
* Social/Historical Issues
* Technology
* Health Issues
* Business/Economics
* Latin American/Caribbean/U.S./Canadian Studies - Model Programs and
Centers
Because this conference aims to examine current trends and their
historical context, papers concerned with the past and the present
and those that draw comparisons over time are very welcome.

Guidelines for Submitting Proposal Abstracts
Abstracts of papers, panel discussions, poster sessions (visual
displays with brief presentations) and non-traditional presentations
involving video, art, poetry or music are invited. A Conference
Committee of faculty from representative colleges at the University
of South Florida will review and select abstracts.

Please send three copies of the following:
* A single-page proposal abstract not exceeding 200 words
* A brief biographical sketch
* A completed presenter's reply form (in this announcement)

Presentations will be limited to 25 minutes, including time for
questions and discussion. The Conference will provide a podium,
microphone and, upon request, standard audio-visual equipment. Other
equipment is available, but presenters may be asked to pay rental
charges for specialized equipment if charges exceed $100 for the
request.

Proposals are due by June 30, 1997. Mail or fax proposals to Pam
Price, Division of Conferences and Institutes, University of South
Florida, 4202 E. Fowler Avenue, MGY 153, Tampa, FL 33620-6600 USA;

with its rich Hispanic heritage, provide charm and vitality to the
area. Additional Conference activities are being planned at USF and
in Ybor City.
