INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT
AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT:
-----------------------

*****LATIN AMERICA: CROSSROAD OF CULTURES AND SOCIETIES.
HISTORICAL DIMENSIONS FOR A GLOBAL FUTURE*****
Second European Congress of Latin Americanists
September 4-6, 1998
University of Halle-Wittenberg
Halle, Germany

The contact between cultures and the conflicts that can thus ensue, with
their consequent problems of cultural identity and of incorporation of
"the other" into "the self" (or, on the other hand, of their marked
separation) is a thematic focus of the social sciences throughout the
world today. Latin America is, without a doubt, one of the regions that
has produced such cultural contact to a significant degree, since it was
there that the European colonizers came in contact (and conflict) with
indigenous cultures and civilizations, leading to the subsequent
destruction of the latter. Other notable societal areas of contact and
conflict have arisen in more recent history due to the slave trade of the
colonial period, which introduced African culture(s) into the mix that is
Latin America, and the great migratory movements, especially around the
turn of the 19th century in Argentina and Uruguay, and earlier in the
19th century with the influx of Asians into the Caribbean countries and Peru.

The present conference is of international scope and multidisciplinary
nature on issues of cultural contact affecting Latin America. Its main
concern is the shape of cultural contact both in the past and in the
present, with an eye towards the future of Latin America, especially in
view of how these might impact international and intercultural relations
in an increasingly globalized world. The conference format is arranged
according to symposia on specific topics, such as **"Power in Latin
America" (Poder en America Latina)**, which is highlighted below in this
announcement. There are approximately 50 symposia in all, divided into
the following thematic categories:

- Geography/Regional Studies
- Political Science/Sociology
- Juridical Science/Law
- Economics
- History/Archaeology/Anthropology
- Theology
- History of Art/Communications
- Literature/Linguistics
- Women's Studies
- Colonial Enlightenment
- Cultural theory

For further information on the conference itself, such as other symposia,
how to register, the conference site, accommodations, etc., visit the
Second European Congress of Latin Americanists website:

in all its manifestations in Latin America, please read the following
announcement.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:
--------------------

*****"POWER IN LATIN AMERICA"*****
*****"Poder en America Latina"*****

"Power in Latin America" ("El poder en America Latina") is one of many
proposed symposia to be held at the Second European Congress of Latin
Americanists, and it promises to provide an exciting array of
perspectives from a broad range of disciplines. Since the term "power"
itself has multiple connotations, we purposely leave the interpretation
of it open, to increase the possible points of view which could be
considered within such a symposium. We invite the submission of
abstracts on any topic relating to the interplay of power in Latin
America, especially those which have to do with the three main conference
themes:

- The role of women in Latin America
- Colonial Enlightenment/reception of Encyclopedism
- Theories of culture

While this symposium is listed under the category of Political Science
and Sociology (Politica, Politologia y Sociologia), it is actually
intended to be interdisciplinary in nature, and novel perspectives are
certainly welcome. Papers which seek to forge new links between
established fields or to develop new subfields are also encouraged. Some
of the proposed topics for the symposium "Power in Latin America" are:

- Power and Politics
- Power in Literature
- Philosophical Considerations of Power
- Sociological Considerations of Power
- Power and Economy
- Power and History
- Other perspectives will also be considered if they are
especially compelling.

Abstracts should be no more than one page (A4 or letter size), with an
additional page for references **if necessary**. They may be written in
either English or Spanish. Authors should send:

- One copy of an anonymous abstract
- One additional copy with the author's name, affiliation, primary
author's postal address, e-mail address, telephone number and fax, and
whether any special equipment will be needed (e.g., overhead projector,
slide projector, etc.). This second copy may be longer than one page.

In North America, send abstracts to:
