The Library of Congress, Federal Research Division, is preparing a new
edition of Costa Rica: A Country Study (2d. ed., 1983, 336 p., edited by
Harold D. Nelson, Foreign Area Studies, American University), one of a
continuing series of books to be published by LC under the Country
Studies/Area Handbook Program. Using primary source data where possible,
the books provide scholarly description and analysis of a country's
history (ch.1), society and environment (ch. 2), economy (ch. 3),
government and politics (ch. 4), and national security (ch. 5). Due dates
for manuscripts will be in the final quarter of 1995. Each ch. can range
in length from 60 to 85 pages double-spaced in WordPerfect or any
PC-compatible software. A complete bibliography and relevant tables are
also required. Applicants should mail or fax (not e-mail) the editor (Rex
Hudson) a resume and a brief writing sample (unless published work is
readily available). US citizenship is not required. However, all ch.
authors must have strong, demonstrated English-language writing ability,
as well as expertise in a related discipline and some background in
Central American or Costa Rican studies. The books in this series that I
have edited generally have been authored by professors with country
expertise. However, advanced Ph.D. candidates whose research relates to
the country are also welcome to apply. Contract payments may vary
depending on qualifications and ch. scope and may range from $2,200 to
$2,800. The ed. would also welcome e-mail inquiries, as well as
suggestions regarding the book's content or recommendations and addresses
of qualified authors who may not be likely to see this post.
