Over the last few weeks the Sendero has reasserted itself in its
provincial strongholds. This has been possible because Fugimori was
forced to withdraw crack troops from those areas to attend to the border
war with Equador. The Sendero has recently executed numerous
collaborators (their view of their victims) in these areas, and in some
villages, people will not go out of their homes at night because the
Sendero are nearby. In addition to deaths, the Sendero has brought back
its graffiti, the hammer and sickle, along with written warnings that
anyone who erases these postings from the roadways at the edge of
villages will be beheaded. These details have been in Latin American
newspapers over the last few weeks.
Anyone who wants details about current Sendero activities can find large
doses with ease: check out the Usenet newsgroup soc.culture.peru.
