Announcement The Latin American Program of the Woodrow Wilson
International Center for Scholars seeks a paid intern to work during the
Fall semester. Undergraduate interns will work shifts of 15-20 hours per
week at a pay rate of $6.50/hour; graduate students will work similar
shifts at a pay rate of $8.00/hour. The responsibilities of the interns
will vary in accordance with the specific interests, talents, and
abilities of the students. Generally, however, they will be expected to
perform a wide range of duties including: assistance with conference
planning and organization, issue-oriented and bibliographic researchat
the Library of Congress and area libraries, assistance with the
publication of working papers and conference volumes, data entry, and
general office duties.
Background The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars was
founded by Congress in 1968 as a "living memorial" to the 28th president
of the United States. TheCenter's purpose is to support advanced
research on national and international issues by scholars and
practitioners from all over the world, and to bring together the realms
of scholarship and public affairs that Wilson himself combined. The
Latin American Program, established in 1977, is one of seven programs,
each with a regional or thematic emphasis. In keeping with the Center's
broad mandate, the Latin American Program aims to foster research and
discussion on Latin American topics, and to promote an exchange of ideas
among persons from governments, international organizations, the media,
business, labor, foundations, churches, and the professions, as well as
the academic world. To pursue these goals, the Program sponsors a range
of scholarly activities including scholarly networks and study groups,
multi-day conferences, seminars,and colloquia designed to present a wide
range of perspectives and ideas. Requirements The ideal intern will be
diligent third or fourth year undergraduate or M.A. student with a
proven interest in Latin America, some Spanish and/or Portugueselanguage
skills, and a willingness to engage in a wide range of activities and
duties. Selective factors will include: coursework or work experience
relatedto Latin America, experience with word processing and data entry,
and familiarity with Macintosh computers. Minorities are encouraged to
