Life in indigenous communities in Mexico is communal --
each person bears a responsibility toward the well-being of
the group. Likewise, when outside investigators enter
indigenous communities to conduct research, they take on the
mutual, communal responsibilities implied by membership.
They must contribute to the strengthening of the communities
through the recuperation of their history, and the results
of their investigations must be made accessible to the local
people.
Juana Vasquez Vasquez is a Zapotec woman who has
represented her community in the local and national Mexican
political arena and has served as a national delegate to the
World Council of Indigenous Womena and at other gatherings
of indigenous women. She has participated in the
organization of the Union de Mujeres Yalaltecas, studied
medicine at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico, and has
served in the Instituto Nacional Indigenista. Currently, she
is a primary organizer of the Servicios del Pueblo Mixe in
the Oaxacan Sierra. She participates in the University of
Pennsylvania study-abroad program in Oaxaca, Mexico. The
talk will be in Spanish.
The Latin American Cultures Program of the University
of Pennsylvania is an interdisciplinary scholarly group
which meets monthly. It features presentation and
discussion of recent work by faculty, visiting scholars, and
graduate students at the University of Pennsylvania. The
Seminar welcomes participants from outside the University as
well.
