The North-South Center, University of Miami
Announces Research Grant on Sustainable Development

The North-South Center and the AVINA Foundation are committed to
exploring how day-to-day economic decisions in Latin America and the
Caribbean can be based upon the concept that economic development, the
management of natural resources, and the promotion of equity in
economic opportunities are mutually supportive. To address these
issues, a Research Grant Competition on Economic Growth and
Sustainable Development has been established jointly.

Researchers from the social sciences, business, and law, as well as
practitioners in policy development and education are invited through
this grant competition to examine the themes of economic growth and
sustainable development as they relate to Latin American and Caribbean
countries.

Goals and Objectives

The overall goal of the program is to identify and examine
development strategies that build upon the principles of sustainable
development. The Declaration of Principles adopted at the December
1994 Summit of the Americas states that ~the Americas are united in
pursuing prosperity through open markets, hemispheric integration, and
sustainable development.~ The grant program will provide new resources
to build leadership and understanding around this integrated vision.

The research funded through this program will be conducted between
the period July 1, 1996 and September 30, 1997. Support will include
travel expenses, materials (phone, facsimile, supplies, copies, and
database access), domestic transportation, remuneration for
investigators, and pre-publication expenses. The maximum grant award
will be $35,000. Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek matching
funding for projects.

Applications and proposals will be evaluated, based on the
feasibility of the research, the overall quality of the proposal,
potential impact on target areas, policy relevance, and the potential
contribution to the existing body of knowledge in the discipline.

Preliminary applications are due on April 1, 1996 and complete
proposals packages by April 30, 1996.
