ANNOUNCING NACLA'S SPECIAL REPORT:
"IN PURSUIT OF PROFIT: A PRIMER ON THE NEW TRANSNATIONAL
INVESTMENT"
Transnational corporations touch our lives in a multitude of
ways. They make most of the clothes we wear, the food we eat,
and the household products we use. It's easy to be lulled
into thinking that these products have no history. What we
see, of course, is only the visible end result of complex
global production networks often involving workers in several
countries. The North American Congress on Latin America
(NACLA) reveals these processes in "IN PURSUIT OF PROFIT,"
the January/February 1996 issue of its bimonthly magazine
NACLA Report on the Americas.
In this special Report, Doug Henwood, the editor of Left
Business Observer, makes intelligible the complex world of
finance capital. Duke University professor Gary Gereffi maps
out how global corporations are structured, how they operate,
and how Latin America fits into the picture. Hector Figueroa,
a researcher at the Service Employees International Union,
provides a sobering analysis of the garment industry which
pits workers throughout the Americas against each another.
Helen Shapiro, a professor of economics at Harvard
University, shows how the transnational auto industry in
Brazil reflects the dynamic interaction between state policy
and global industrial trends.
NACLA has been covering Latin America and the Caribbean from
a critical perspective for 28 years. In the coming months,
NACLA will publish special reports on transnational
investment, indigenous movements and social policy. We
invite you to become a subscriber to NACLA Report on the
Americas, your permanent source of accessible information and
analysis on Latin America.
