Once again, in the Fall Semester 1996 (August 12-December 13, 1996), Duke
University will offer the DUKE IN THE ANDES program in Bolivia. This is
an interdisciplinary semester program in Latin American and Andean
Studies in La Paz, Bolivia at the Universidad Mayor de San Andres and the
Universidad Catolica Boliviana.
The program is designed as a new model in undergraduate Study Abroad
which encompasses interdisciplinarity with area and cultural studies.
Duke in the Andes offers a set of courses under the general topic of
Latin American Cultural Studies. Two core courses, which will include
both Duke and Bolivian students from both the Universidad de San Andres
and the Universidad Catolica Boliviana, are specially designed for the
program to create the possibility of fruitful interaction between
American students and Bolivian students. Participants will also select
two additional courses from among the regular Latin American Studies
courses offered at the two host universities.
The two core courses are: "The Articulation of Culture in the Bolivian
Andes" and "Colonialism, Ethnicity and Gender in Postrevolutionary
Bolivia."
Students may choose the remaining two courses from among the following:
Advanced Spanish Grammar
Bolivian Culture
Bolivian Contemporary Short Fiction
Bolivian Cultural Anthropology
Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced Aymara
Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced Quechua
Several excursions and field trips related to the course work will be
arranged.
Participants will be housed in carefully selected Bolivian homes in La
Paz. The Resident Director, Dr. Javier Sanjines, a Bolivian native and
specialist in Bolivian Cultural Studies who has studied in the U.S.,
assists students in all academic matters. A program coordinator, also a
Bolivian native, places participants in La Paz families, organizes all
excursions, and assists students in personal and every-day matters.
Duke University welcomes applicants from accredited colleges and
universities. All applicants will be considered without regard to race,
color, national origin, handicap, sexual orientation or preference, sex
or age.
