REFORMA NATIONAL LIBRARY CONFERENCE UPDATE

The first National Library Conference addressing library and
information services to the Spanish-Speaking is set for August
22-25 in Austin, Texas. More than sixty-five programs designed
for librarians, educators, support staff, policy makers and the
community-at-large are planned. While the programs provide many
opportunities for stimulating discussions and learning, the
Conference will bring together information professionals and
experts in other fields of public policy impacting the Latino/Hispanic
community.

PROGRAM TOPICS...Access and Collections, Innovations, Career
Choices, Children's Services, Cultural Sensitivity, Educational
Partnerships, Fundraising, Literacy, Bibliographic Instruction,
Leadership, Information Technology, Outreach, Public Relations,
Public Policy, Recruitment, and Staff Development and Training.

HIGHLIGHTS.....

PRECONFERENCE INSTITUTE: LATINOS AND THE INFORMATION
SUPERHIGHWAY, THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1-5 PM
The RNC will begin with a policy discussion on issues related to
Latinos and the Information Superhighway. Will Latinos become a
part of the "have nots" in the new information society? Speakers
will include Elizabeth Martinez, Executive Director of the
American Library Association, Betty Turock, ALA President and
Tony Wilhelm, Senior Research Associate at the Tomas Rivera
Center for Public Policy. A panel of distinguished professionals will
offer their comments on the presentations.

BIENVENIDOS RECEPTION: THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 7-9 PM
A Texas-size welcome reception sponsored by the Local
Arrangements Committee will be held at the Lyndon B. Johnson
Presidential Library located on the campus of the University of
Texas.

OPENING GENERAL SESSION: FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 9:30-10:30 AM
Lydia Camarillo, Executive Director of the Southwest Voter
Registration Education Project will serve as the opening keynote
discussing "Latino Empowerment: Patterns, Trends and Strategies
for Success".

PURA BELPRE AWARD: The conference will include a celebration of the
Pura Belpre Children's Literature Award featuring prominent Latino
Children's writers.

AUTHOR DINNER: FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 7-9 PM
An evening with internationally renowned poet and author Sandra
Cisneros.

SILVER ANNIVERSARY BANQUET: SATURDAY, AUGUST 24, 7 PM-1 AM
Join all the attendees at this memorable banquet commemorating 25
years of library service to the community. The program will include
a REFORMA retrospective and recognition of prominent Latino librarians
and accomplishments.

CLOSING SESSION/BRUNCH BUFFET, SUNDAY, AUGUST 25, 10-12 PM
Don't miss the culminating session featuring several prominent speakers from
the public policy, academic and cultural arenas discussing the issue
of Latino unity - moving beyond distinct agendas to a cohesive Latino
partnership for change. What are some of the implications for librarians
and the information profession? Speakers invited include award winning
actor Edward James Olmos, Felix Padilla, founder and editor of the Latino
Studies Journal and author of Latino Ethnic Consciousness and Raul Yzaguirre,
President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza.

EXHIBITS: A full range of exhibitors will be on hand at the
Exhibit Plaza at the Convention Center all day Saturday and
Sunday. Each day's session will begin with continental
breakfast during no-conflict times. The exhibits will also
include author signings and placement services. Exhibit space

AUSTIN: A MAGNET FOR CREATIVE SOULS

Situated deep in the heart of Texas, Austin is a beautiful and
dynamic city and is the state's political, cultural and
intellectual capital. The local arrangements committee has
arranged for an outstanding array of activities and tours to
complement the conference. Tour #1 will include visits to the
Sanchez Elementary School, a bilingual, multicultural school and
the Terrazas Branch of the Austin Public Library; Tour #2 will
feature an introduction to the Texas State Library Archives and
St. Edward's University with a distinction for its multicultural
core curriculum.
