Sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces and co-hosted by the Center
for Latin American Studies (NMSU), the Symposium will focus on the History
of the Church in Latin America. This international event will attract some
of the best church Historians in the Western Hemisphere with participants
from Argentina, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Puerto Rico, France, and the United
States.
During the past 24 years, this International Organisation of Historians,
both Catholic and Protestant, has attempted to promote a renewed history of
the Church in Latin America. Indeed, an important project of this eminent
group of Scholars has been the compilation of a twelve-volume history of the
Church in Latin America and of the Hispanics in the United States.
September 15, is the opening night with Bishop Ramirez's welcome and keynote
addresses by Dr. Enrique Dussel of Argentina and Rev. Virgilio Elizondo of
the United States. During the next three days, presentations exploring the
Symposium's central theme "Borders": Exclusion Globalization, and
integration in the light of Church History, will be offered by CEHILA
members." At present, there are tentative plans to provide simultaneous and
consecutive interpretation of talks given in Spanish.
There will be no admission charge. For additional information concerning
this event and a listing of the titles and times of the many talks contact
the Diocesan Pastoral Center at (505)523-7577 or the Center for Latin
American Studies (NMSU) at 646-2842.
