The 75th annual Central States Anthropological Society (CSAS) meeting
will be in Kansas City, Missouri, From April 2 to April 5, 1998, at the
Crowne Plaza Hotel, 45th and Main, Kansas City, MO, 64111. The CSAS
invites the submission of papers covering all areas of anthropology,
including archaeology, biological, and linguistic anthropology, with an
emphasis on the current AAA theme, and on the teaching of anthropology.
Contributions reviewing the history of the CSAS are also welcome. A
limited number of individual poster presentations will also be accepted.
The deadline for submission of abstracts for papers, sessions,
roundtables, and workshops is December 10, 1997.

A special set of open workshops during the conference will feature
discussion of teaching strategies in the undergraduate anthropology
classroom. Each workshop will focus on a specific course in
anthropology (e.g., theory, kinship, religion, field methods...).
Participants are encouraged to bring sample syllabi. The workshop on
teaching theory will be led by Robert Roy Reed. Individuals wishing to
propose and/or moderate additional workshops should contact Professor

Persons interested in organizing sessions for the meetings should
communicate their interest as soon as possible to the Program Chair.
Papers that are proposed as part of an organized session should be
mailed to the organizer of that session who will submit them together as
a complete package to the Program Chair.
Graduate and undergraduate student members of the CSAS may submit paper
proposals but these require the signature of a sponsoring faculty
member. Others do not have to be members of the CSAS to present papers;
however all proposals must be accompanied by registration forms and fees
for the presenter(s).
Kansas City is centrally located, easy to reach, and the scene of an
exciting jazz and blues and contemporary arts scene. The Crowne Plaza
Hotel is 30 minutes from Kansas City International Airport and 10
minutes from Kansas City Downtown Airport. The hotel includes a
convenient bar, just off the lobby, and dining at its Main Street
Grill. There is a large health club on the premises, as well as an
indoor pool and an outdoor sun deck. The Crowne Plaza looks out over
Kansas City's world-famous Country Club Plaza and is only a short
distance from the renowned Nelson-Atkins Art Gallery, the Kemper Museum
of Contemporary Art and Design, the Missouri Repertory Theatre, and The
Levee. The Country Club Plaza, a stylish, fresh air shopping and dining
district features Spanish architecture and a wide variety of stores,
galleries, and restaurants. The Nelson hosts an expansive display of
art from antiquity to post-modern. The Kemper exhibits recent work by
the hottest names in the art world as well as esteemed regional
artists. Missouri Repertory Theatre is the area's premier professional
stage, performing classical dramas and comedies September through June.
The Levee offers some of the best in Kansas City blues and Jazz. In
addition, a Friday night jazz "club crawl" and barbecue dinner will be
arranged for conference participants. A club crawl is an excellent way
to sample some of Kansas City's finest jazz clubs. Transportation to
each club on the itinerary will be provided.

registering. Registration will also be possible at the meeting site;
however all persons presenting papers at the meeting must pre-register
and pre-pay the registration fees. Conference registration fees are:
