The Images of Women Conference Team (composed of student leaders from
various SWT organization and sponsored by SWT faculty and staff) has begun
preparations for the 3rd Annual Images of Women Conference to be held Saturday
March 28, 1998 on the Southwest Texas campus. As the population of Latinas
in the United States continues to grow, there is a continuing need to assure
that they are provided with the tools to become empowered. Once empowered,
Latinas, and women in general, are better able to effectively serve the
political, economic and cultural needs of Hispanics in the United States.
Thus, the Team has chosen Latinas: Afirmacion y Poder (Empowerment and
Affirmation) as its theme. In order to reach as many Latinas in Texas as
possible, the conference will be promoted statewide and will attract over 300
delegates, thus making Images of Women one of the largest conferences
benefiting Latinas in the state of Texas.
In planning the conference, the members of the programming team have
invited and/or contracted 10 speakers -- each who, in their own way, has been
effective in their respective field and have led the way in the empowerment of
Latinas across the country. Invited as keynote speakers will be: Chicana
artist, educator, MacArthur Award Fellow and psychologist, Amelia
Mesa-Bains; writer and actress Denise Chavez. Presenters include: dancer and
educational consultant, Rosa Guerrero; national presenter and counselor Shelly
Hinojosa; Dean Helen Castillo (UT Pan American, College of Nursing and Health
Sciences); Historian, Dr. Antonia Castaneda (St. Mary's University);
Coordinator of Casa de Colores and natural healer, Ms. Elga Garza Garcia; as
well as University, community and statewide leaders. Team members are also
organizing an art exhibit and internet seminar as part of the Images of Women
program.
The Team is planning to extend an invitation to students from
San Marcos High School, the local Junior High Schools, and other area schools
to promote the importance of women's issues and higher education. At this
time we have also been fortunate to have attracted perspective guests from
other area universities such as the University of Texas, Texas A&M,
University of Houston, Austin College, Texas A&M Mexico City, University of
Utah, Stanford University, Syracuse University in New York, Baylor University,
Incarnate Word, San Antonio Community College, Austin Community College,
Florida International University, and Chicago, Il.
The IOW Team is committed to make this accesible for students by only
charging $15.00 pre-registration for students, $35.00 pre-registration for
non-students, and $40.00 pre-registration for professional. Deadlines for
pre-registration wil be set at a later date. Registration will include a
continental breakfast and lunch. Registration will also be available online
once the IOW website is fully functioning.
This year's conference should be the largest ever. We strongly
encourage you to mark your calendar and start making plans to attend this years
Images of Women Conference. If you have any additional questions or would just
