Director of the Institute for Urban Education
Qualifications: The Graduate School of Education of the University at
Buffalo is seeking
an urban education scholar to serve as Director of the Urban Education
Institute. This
senior administrative position requires an individual with strong academic
credentials that
reflect achievement and scholarly productivity. A record of research,
publication, public
service and success in obtaining external funding for research and
educational programming
is necessary.This three year renewable appointment leads to permanent
administrative status
after six successful years.
An earned doctorate in education or a related field is required. Candidates
should
demonstrate potential for contributing to the development of a program of
studies and
research initiatives on urban education. Applicants must show evidence of
capacity and
commitment to work collaboratively with colleagues, urban educators,
community leaders and ancillary agencies. Proven record of public service
and scholarship initiatives in collaboration
with urban education settings is essential. Demonstrated administrative
experience relevant
to the University and urban education contexts is expected.
Responsibilities: The Director of the Urban Education Institute will work
under the
direction of the Dean of the Graduate School of Education. Responsibilities
will include: administrative functions, research and grant activities,
public service initiatives, and
involvement in the development of policies that impact the minority
communities.This person
will administer the Urban Education Institute, further develop it's vision
and goals, and establish priorities in collaboration with the faculty and
appropriate constituents. He/she also will be
expected to secure external funding and collaborate with an endowed chair
in urban education in research activities.The director will assist creating
a network of relationships and resources to
develop a critical mass of faculty, particularly minority faculty, and
students to engage in public service and scholarship initiatives.
Urban Education Institute: The mission of the Urban Education institute is
to promote and
support research, service and pedagogical and professional activities
focused and grounded in
the educational, organizational, political, social, emotional and cultural
contexts of urban schools. The Institute serves as an urban forum for
national and regional interdisciplinary activities for scholars to examine
urban education issues and interact with each other to facilitate the
creation
of knowledge. Through the Institute, external sources of funding are
pursued to expand and
support collaborative efforts that contribute to developing solutions for
the problems faced by
urban schools.
