HHAwards - Youth Award for Literature/Journalism

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Hispanic Heritage Awards Foundation was established in 1987 to promote Hispanic excellence, provide a greater understanding of the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and provide role models to inspire our youth.

The Awards Foundation, through the sponsorship of NBC is proud to introduce the first ever Hispanic Heritage Youth Award for Literature/Journalism. The Youth Award program offers award opportunities to Hispanic high school students in nine major cities: Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio and San Francisco. Beginning January 30, 1999, nominations will be available through schools and community organizations in each city. Nominations will be accepted through March 26, 1999. One regional winner will be selected from each city and will be announced at a Regional Awards Reception in May 1999.

A selection committee comprised of community representatives and educators from each region will select the Regional Winner. Regional award recipients will be selected for their excellence in the areas of literature/journalism and community service.

Each regional winner will receive $1000 toward his/her education, in addition to a $500 contribution in the winner's name to the community service organization of his/her choice. The nine regional winners will be eligible to receive the National Hispanic Heritage Youth Literature Award that will provide an additional $4000 educational award, as well as a round trip to for the awardee and a parent or guardian to Washington, DC, for the Hispanic Heritage Awards ceremony on September 14, 1999. A presentation of the National winner will take place onstage during this annual star-studded gala held at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
