CALL FOR PAPERS
Abstracts due 31 January 2000.
The International Rural Sociological Association together with the
Brazilian Society for Economy and Rural Sociology (SOBER),
the Latin American Rural Sociological Association (ALASRU), and
the Brazilian Sociological Society (SBS) announce
the Xth World Congress for Rural Sociology.
The World Congress will be held at the Hotel Gloria,
Rio de Janeiro, 30 July to 5 August, 2000.

LANGUAGES. The World Congress will be a major event with
English, Spanish, Portuguese and French as official languages.
Simultaneous translation will be available for some sessions.
ABSTRACTS in English are due 31 January 2000.
Abstracts must contain the title, the authors name(s), institution,
key words to describe the paper, and the indication of which
workshop (thematic group) it should be allocated to.
Abstracts should be written in font Times New Roman 12, double
space, and be a maximum of 20 lines of text (about 250 words).
A CD-ROM of complete conference papers will be prepared for
distribution at the Congress. It is optional whether authors want to
be included in the CD-ROM. In order to be included,
the COMPLETE PAPER should be submitted by April 15, 2000
in double space Times New Roman 12, and be a maximum
of 15 pages. The papers can be supplied in any one of the official
languages of the congress: English, Spanish, French or
Portuguese.

REGISTRATION FEES
Registration fees for the World Congress will be very reasonable.
For people registering prior to April 30, registration will be US$200
for participants from OECD countries, and US$100 for people from
non-OECD countries. Full time students (OECD and non-OECD)
will pay US$50.
For people registering after April 30, the fee will be US$300,
$150 and $75 respectively.
A registration form will be available on the IRSA web site shortly.
A range of ACCOMMODATION options will be available. The Gloria
Hotel is a charming Hotel. Photos and details about the Hotel are
available on the Congress Web Site. Details of accommodation
options and prices will be available on the Web site .
TOURS AND SIGHTSEEING
A number of optional extra technical field trips are being developed.
In addition, a number of possible longer tours in Brazil are being
developed.
Details will be placed on the web site as soon as they are finalised.

PLENARY SPEAKERS
There will be two plenaries.
Plenary 1: What is the meaning of rural social sustainability?
Speakers: Armando Bartra Vergés (Mexico); Cornelia Flora (USA);
José Graziano da Silva (Brazil); Marc Mormont (Belgium); and
Sarah Whatmore (United Kingdom).
Plenary 2: What is the future of rural sociology and its contribution
to rural livelihoods?
Speakers: Lawrence Busch (USA); Miguel Murmis (Argentina); and
José de Souza Martins (Brazil).
SYMPOSIA
There will be a number of symposia with invited speakers and
discussants addressing key issues in rural sociology today.
Symposia will allow plenty of time for general discussion.
Topics include:
(a) Sociological reflections on sustainability (with RC 24);
(b) Sociological contributions to natural resource management;
(c) The process of democratisation in rural areas;
(d) Latin American issues;
(e) New approaches for the development of rural communities;
(f) Agriculture, nature and social change (with RC 40);
(g) Regional economic blocks and agrarian policies;
(h) Rural Livelihoods;
(i) Resettlement;
(j) Agricultural Technology, Society and the Life Sciences.
Over 50 WORKSHOP topics covering all aspects of rural society
have been devised and coordinators appointed.

As the Tenth World Congress of Rural Sociology, the conference
will address a wide range issues facing rural communities today.
The overall theme is:
Sustainable Rural Livelihoods: Building Communities, Protecting
Resources, Fostering Human Development.
HISTORY OF IRSA
Formed in 1964, the International Rural Sociology Association is a
global consortium of regional and continental societies of rural
sociology.
The objectives of IRSA are to:
* foster the development of rural sociology;
* further the application of sociological inquiry to the improvement
of the quality of rural life; and
* provide a mechanism whereby rural sociologists can generate
dialogue and useful exchange.
As a worldwide association of associations,
its members include the:
Rural Sociological Society (North America),
Latin American Rural Sociology Association (ALASRU),
European Society for Rural Sociology,
Asian Rural Sociological Society,
Association of Mediterranean Rural Sociologists;
and the Australia and Oceania Network for rural social research
and rural community development (AON).
World Congresses are held every 4 years. Some previous meeting
sites are Bucharest, Romania (1996), Penn State University, USA
(1992), Bologna, Italy (1988), Manilla, Philippines (1984), and
Mexico City, Mexico (1980).
