Source: Center for International Health Information (CIHI), April 1996.

Definition: An estimate of the proportion of all cases of diarrhea in children under age 5 treated with ORS and/or a recommended home fluid.

Note: Countries marked with an (*) are not included in the aggregates because estimates of the number of children under 5 were not available for countries as small as these.

SOURCES:

All data are drawn from annnual reports published by WHO/CDD except for the following: a) 1989 data for Bolivia are from the 1989
Demog. and Health Survey; b) 1986 data for Brazil are from the 1988 Demog. and Health Survey; c) 1986 data for Colombia are from
the 1988 Demographic and Health Survey; d) 1986 data for the Dom. Rep. are from the 1988 Demog. and Health Survey; e) 1985 data
for El Salvador are from the 1985 Demog. and Health Survey and 1988 data are from the 1988 Family Health Survey; f) 1987 data for
Guatemala are from the 1987 Demog. and Health Survey, and 1991 data are from the Nat'l Health Information Survey as cited by
USAID Mission; g) 1991 data for Honduras are from the 1992 Epidemiological and Family Health Survey; h) 1986 data for Peru
are from the 1986 Demog. and Health Survey and 1991 data are from the 1991/92 Demog. and Health Survey: i) 1987 data for Trinidad &
Tobago are from the 1988 Demographic and Health Survey; j) 1991 data for Guatemala are reported on the annual Health and Child
Survival Project Questionnaire, 520-0288.

NOTES:

a) In an effort to publish more timely data, WHO accelerated the reporting cycle and asked countries to report in early 1992 for 1991
rather than 1990 as originally planned. The corresponding column in the table is labelled 1990/91.

b) As very few countries reported in 1992, no data are provided for that year.
c) This table is identical to the table for the last two years because WHO has chosen not to publish data since 1994
due to the uncertain quality of reported data.
