Sources: GNP/capita (Atlas) and GNI/capita, World Bank 1995; PPP GDP/capita, Penn World Tables, Version 5.6.; Income Share, UNDP Human Development Report (HDR), 1995; People in Poverty, Total, UNDP HDR, 1994.

[a] The World Bank Atlas method converts GNP/capita in national currency to US$ by averaging the exchange rate for that year and two preceding years, adjusting for differences in rates of inflation between the two countries. This averaging smooths fluctuations in prices and exchange rates. The resulting GNP in US$ is divided by mid-year population estimates for GNP/capita in current US$. The figures included in the section entitled "groupings" are from 1993.

[b] PPP signifies "purchasing power parity." The use of official exchange rates to convert the national currency figures to US$ does not attempt to measure the relative domestic purchasing powers of currencies. The PPP measure of real GDP on a internationally comparable scale converts GDP using purchasing power parities instead of exchange rates, and is expressed in current international dollars. Version 5.6 of the Penn World Tables details a number of data and methodology changes; hence these data differ significantly from prior years. All values are for 1994, except those asterisked. Of these, Uruguay, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago are from 1993; Belize and St. Kitts are from 1992; and Grenada is from 1990. These figures should be compared with caution to 1994 data.

[c] Around 1990.

[d] Gross national income is the sum of gross national product (GNP) plus the terms of trade adjustment. (Terms of trade adjustment is the value of exports of goods and services deflated by the import price index, less exports of goods and services in constant prices.) This indicator is provided to highlight the change of GNI/capita in CONSTANT dollars from 1980 to 1990, and 1993. For most of LAC, GNI/capita dropped in the 1980s, but resurged in the early 1990s.

[e] The World Bank, Report number 14038-NI of June 1, 1995 reports that in 1993, 50% of the population fell below the poverty line. Figures may differ due to differences in definitions of the poverty line.
