Film--Eyes of the Rainbow (Cuba, 1997, 47 mins. in English) by Cuban filmmaker Gloria Rolando. This film deals with the life of Assata Shakur, the Black Panther and Black Liberation Army leader who escaped from a U.S. prison in 1979 and was given political asylum in Cuba, and with her relationship with Afro-Cuban culture, notably the Yoruba Orisha Oya. Position in Luso-Brazilian Literature and Culture, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, University of California, Berkeley. Rank and specialty open, but candidate must have primary strength in Brazilian literature. Additional expertise desirable in one or more of the following fields: Spanish-American literature and culture, Portuguese literature and culture, and/or Luso-African literature and culture. Will teach undergraduate and graduate courses. Requirements: completed Ph.D. or equivalent by time of employment, native or near-native fluency in Portuguese, demonstrated excellence in teaching and research. Call for Papers--Chicanos/as y Mexicanos/as: Dos Comunidades, Un Mismo Pueblo, National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies XXV Annual Conference, Mexico City, June 24-27, 1998. The 1998 Conference Program Committee seeks submissions for the annual meeting of NACCS in Mexico City. All submissions, both individual and panel proposals, require individual abstracts. The complete submission request consists of a 250 word abstract and a completed proposal form. Deadline: Oct. 10, 1997. Submissions are being received at two sites: in Mexico and the U.S. Proposals that originate from Mexico should be sent to the Mexico address, those from the U.S. should be sent to the U.S. address. Call for Papers--International Meeting of American Portuguese Studies Association, Yale University, March 26-28, 1998. The conference will be dedicated to the memory of Jorge de Sena but papers may be on any topic pertaining to the literatures and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world. Bastards of Imperialism: Identity, Nation, and Citizenship in the Wake of Spanish and US Expansions, 1848, 1898, 1998, Stanford University, April 30-May 2, 1998. This conference addresses the historical events and continuing effects of the Wars of 1848 and 1898 in the development of U.S. racial and ethnic groups, including Chicano, Cuban, Pacific Island, Pilipino, Puerto Rican, African-American, and Native American populations.Topics that proposals might consider: race and law; language policies and practices; migration, immigration, and exile; national imaginations and histories; postcolonial theory in the Americas, to name a few. Comparative and interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged. Conference papers will be 25 minutes in length. Travel funds may be available for accepted papers. Articles Requested--El Planeta Plática (The Earth Speaks) newsletter is seeking articles for the upcoming November issue on local communities, environment, and tourism in the Americas. There will be a special focus section on indigenous peoples if there is interest in this topic. Planeta is a highly regarded quarterly journal, available online at www.planeta.com and in print (the four issues are printed simultaneously at the end of the year). Topics to address: How do local communities benefit from tourism? What is and isn't "public participation"? Are international groups a help or a hindrance? A week's extension may be granted to those who request it. Submissions via are the easiest to handle. Technical specifications: Please send materials in a text-only format. The journal Latin American Issues invites contributions from all social science and humanities disciplines on topics related to our forthcoming monographic issue "(De)Constructing the Mexican-American Border." Manuscripts should be typed (double-spaced and in MLA style), range from 20 to 30 pages in length,be written in English, and be on a 3.5 disk in WordPerfect format. Each manuscript will be reviewed by the Editorial Board and by such outside referees as deemed appropriate.
