EMPLOYMENT AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Del Valle schools (located in southeast Austin) are looking for mentors. Mentoring is a wonderful way to make a difference in the life of a child. It requires only 30 minutes of your time a week. Bilingual mentors are especially needed. Mentoring is an opportunity to: speak Spanish, learn more about schools and educational programs if you are thinking about becoming an educator, network with other educators, and learn about different cultures. Assistant or Associate Professor in Portuguese, Indiana University-Bloomington. Begin Fall 1998. Tenure track or tenured position. Ability to teach courses in language as well as on the literatures/cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world is essential. Native or near-native proficiency. Experience in undergraduate and graduate program development a plus. Ph.D. in hand or expected by date of appointment. Candidate must be able to teach Spanish language if needed. Call for Papers-Southwest Labor Studies Association 24th Annual Conference, St. Edward's University, Austin, April 24-26,1998. This year's conference theme is "Organizing: Past, Present, and Future." Papers are welcome from graduate students as well as faculty members and labor activists on all aspects of international labor issues. Bastards of Imperialism: Identity, Nation, and Citizenship in the Wake of Spanish and US Expansions, 1848, 1898, 1998, Stanford University, April 30-May 2, 1998. This conference addresses the historical events and continuing effects of the Wars of 1848 and 1898 in the development of U.S. racial and ethnic groups, including Chicano, Cuban, Pacific Island, Pilipino, Puerto Rican, African-American, and Native American populations.Topics that proposals might consider: race and law; language policies and practices; migration, immigration, and exile; national imaginations and histories; postcolonial theory in the Americas, to name a few. Comparative and interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged. Conference papers will be 25 minutes in length. Travel funds may be available for accepted papers. ANNOUNCEMENTS

The journal Latin American Issues invites contributions from all social science and humanities disciplines on topics related to our forthcoming monographic issue "(De)Constructing the Mexican-American Border." Manuscripts should be typed (double-spaced and in MLA style), range from 20 to 30 pages in length, be written in English, and be on a 3.5 disk in WordPerfect format. Each manuscript will be reviewed by the Editorial Board and by such outside referees as deemed appropriate. Send two copies of your manuscript to the editors at: Latin American Issues, Modern Languages Department, Box 63, Allegheny College, Meadville, PA 16335. Deadline for submissions: Nov. 1, 1997.

Call for Articles-The Center for Latin American Studies at Georgetown University is pleased to announce the 1997-1998 issue of Entrecaminos, entitled "Latin America: 1898-1998, One Hundred Years of Independence?" Entrecaminos is an interdisciplinary journal associated with the Center for Latin American Studies at Georgetown University. The Editorial Board of Entrecaminos is currently welcoming submissions for publication. Articles may vary in length from ten to thirty pages, and may be written in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. If you are interested in publishing an article, please submit a copy of it in a 3.5" IBM formatted diskette, as well as two hard copies, double-spaced with endnotes, to: Center for Latin American Studies, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington, DC 20057-1026. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 15, 1998.
