AnnouncementsLatino USA Special Black History Month and Women's History Month Program. In its February special, Latino USA will explore the historical and ongoing ties between Latinos and African Americans. Reports on Blacks and Latinos in New York will be available for broadcast on February 27, along with a piece on Nat King Cole's songs in Spanish. For women's history month in March, Latino USA will feature labor-organizer Dolores Huerta and actress Ruby Nelda Perez. Profiles of these and other accomplished women will capture their characters and contributions. These specials will be broadcast beginning on March 6. Fellowships and Research OpportunitiesC. B. Smith Postdoctoral Fellowship 1998-1999 Competition. The Mexican Center of ILAS, through its C. B. Smith Sr. funds and other private donations, offers from 10 to 15 travel awards to researchers who want to come to Austin to make use of the academic and library resources available at the University of Texas. Applicants must have already obtained a Ph.D. and/or be members of faculties of Mexican universities or advanced Mexican research centers. In terms of researchers with advanced rank in administrative bodies of Mexican museums of art, the professional title may be substituted for the doctorate. These travel awards consist of up to $1000 (U.S.) for the reimbursement of transportation and lodging costs. Deadline for application: May 1, 1998. Fellowships from Population Research Center's Program on Brazilian Demography and Area Studies. Applications solicited from UT-Austin students and faculty. Graduate Student Fellowships and Apprenticeships: Limited funding is available to support population-related dissertation research in developing countries, acquisition of interdisciplinary skills by demographers, and for the final stages of a population-related dissertation based on fieldwork in a developing country. While Brazil continues to be a priority, we also invite applications for summer support for travel and research in other developing countries. In addition to summer support, graduates may apply for longer term support of up to one year for the purpose of acquiring interdisciplinary or "area studies" skills related to anticipated demographic or population research. The format of applications for short-term summer support should take the form of a two- or three-page description of the proposed program and its purpose, together with a budget. Research Awards for Faculty: Faculty may apply for support toward the development of collaborative research projects on population in developing countries. The support requested may be for travel, research expenses, short-term visits from foreign scholars, graduate student research assistantships, and summer salary. Applications should take the form of a two or three page description of the proposed activities and the project to which they will contribute, a budget, and a larger proposal describing this research, should one be available. Applications should be submitted at any time; however, the committee that decides these awards meets only twice a year, its next meeting is on or about April 10, 1998. 1998 Library Travel Grants. The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida will offer these grants for summer 1998, which enable researchers from other U.S. universities to use extensive resources of the Latin American Collection at UF libraries. Three awards of up to $500 each will be made to cover travel and living expenses of faculty members and graduate students. Awardees are expected to remain in Gainesville for at least one week and to submit a brief report on how work at the UF libraries enhanced their project, and possible ways to improve the Latin American Collection. Work must be carried out and completed at UF by Aug. 14, 1998. At least one grant will be awarded to a scholar from a Florida college or university. Study OpportunitiesFall Semester Supervised Program, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, August-December 1998. An intensive Portuguese language and Brazilian studies program in collaboration with Brazilian faculty that is open to advanced undergraduate and graduate students. This fully accredited cooperative program with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UI) offers the opportunity to study in regular university courses in a wide variety of programs, ranging from the humanities and the social sciences to the fine arts, architecture, and administration. Students must have a working knowledge of Portuguese. Applications, with a $200 deposit, are due at the UT and UI Study Abroad Offices no later than Friday, March 20, 1998. The program is open to students from any accredited U.S. college or university, through enrollment at UT and UI. Expectations are that students will be engaged in full-time study. Cost is $3,400 (includes local housing and meals). Costs do not include transportation, UT or UI tuition, and insurance. These program costs are based on the assumption of a minimum of 5 students for the fall program. Should admissions fall below these numbers, UT reserves the right to cancel the program, with the understanding that notice will be given by April 17, 1998, and deposits will be returned.
