Fellowships and Research Opportunities

Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship: Latin American Studies Research Librarian, 1998-99, Duke University Center for International Library Programs. Up to two twelve-month fellowships per year are being offered to recent Ph.D.'s in any field of Latin American studies who wish to pursue careers as Latin American library specialists. Fellows will gain hands-on knowledge of collection development and public service work. Each fellowship for 1998-99 is $37,750 (twelve months, full-time), plus benefits. Call for Applications-Environmental Conflict Resolution in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region. The Ford Foundation/Udall Center Fellowship Program at Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy, University of Arizona, announces the first year of funding for research fellows-in-residence to study environmental conflict resolution (ECR) in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Applications are invited for the academic year 1998-99 for one fellowship, which will include a stipend of $23,000, a private office, and a half-time graduate student assistant, along with some operational support for communications, supplies, and secretarial services. Among other requirements, fellows will be expected to participate in the center's activities, teach a seminar, give lectures, and prepare a ms. for publication. The 1998-99 competition is open to university faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and other scholars with research interests in conflict resolution related to the environment, natural resources, or land use in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Each applicant is requested to submit: (1) brief statement describing policy research interests in general, (2) plans for a specific prject to be undertaken as a Ford Foundation/Udall Center Fellow (not to exceed five pages), (3) a C.V., and (4) two letters of reference. In addition, applicants need to specify the semester for which they are applying (Fall 1998, Spring 1999, or no preference). The Texas Fund for Training Foreign Policy Professionals (TFTFPP) has funds available through the National Security Education Program (NSEP) to send graduate students abroad for fieldwork and/or language study in Arabic-speaking nations, Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, China, Czech Republic, India, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, South Korea, and Turkey. There is no deadline for the application; fellowships will be awarded on a rolling basis. C. B. Smith Postdoctoral Fellowship 1998-99 Competition. The Mexican Center of ILAS, through its C. B. Smith Sr. funds and other private donations, offers from 10 to 15 travel awards to researchers who want to come to Austin to make use of the academic and library resources available at the University of Texas. Applicants must have already obtained a Ph.D. and be members of faculties of Mexican universities or advanced Mexican research centers. In terms of researchers with advanced rank in administrative bodies of Mexican museums of art, the professional title may be substituted for the doctorate. These travel awards consist of up to $1000 (U.S.) for the reimbursement of transportation and lodging costs. Deadline for application: May 1, 1998. Fellowships from Population Research Center's Program on Brazilian Demography and Area Studies. Applications solicited from UT-Austin students and faculty. Graduate Student Fellowships and Apprenticeships: Limited funding is available to support population-related dissertation research in developing countries, acquisition of interdisciplinary skills by demographers, and for the final stages of a population-related dissertation based on fieldwork in a developing country. While Brazil continues to be a priority, we also invite applications for summer support for travel and research in other developing countries. In addition to summer support, graduates may apply for longer term support of up to one year for the purpose of acquiring interdisciplinary or "area studies" skills related to anticipated demographic or population research. The format of applications for short-term summer support should take the form of a two- or three-page description of the proposed program and its purpose, together with a budget. Research Awards for Faculty: Faculty may apply for support toward the development of collaborative research projects on population in developing countries. The support requested may be for travel, research expenses, short-term visits from foreign scholars, graduate student research assistantships, and summer salary. Applications should take the form of a two or three page description of the proposed activities and the project to which they will contribute, a budget, and a larger proposal describing this research, should one be available. Applications should be submitted at any time; however, the committee that decides these awards meets only twice a year, its next meeting is on or about April 10, 1998. Working Conference V: The Relationship between the Humanities and Science, Buenos Aires, Argentina, June 28-July 3, 1998. A Working Conference leads to a more effective dissemination and integration of knowledge since everyone actively contributes to the creative process. This is the fifth Working Conference designed to create a dialogue between humanists and scientists from around the world. The most successful papers at Ometeca Working Sessions bring together aspects of the sciences and the humanities in such a way that they take us beyond particular insights gained in each discipline. Papers may be in English. Portuguese, or Spanish, and should be no longer than 17 pages, single spaced, including bibliography. Calls for Papers-The Yale Latin American & Iberian Journal is now accepting submissions for its Spring/Summer 1998 issue from undergraduates, graduates, and faculty. The staff of the journal will accept original submissions of literary compositions and scholarly research articles of moderate length (up to 6,000 words). Pieces written in English, Spanish, and Portuguese will be considered. The only limitation on content requires that the central focus of the work contains a direct, thematic connection to Latin American and/or Iberian life and culture. Extended deadline: April 15, 1998. Reebok Award Winners Network (RAW Network), Summer Internship (unpaid). RAW Network is an international network of young human rights activists from 30 different countries. It protects and serves human rights defenders by helping them communicate with each other, share best practices, respond to crises, and learn about opportunities and resources. RAW Network seeks energetic, creative interns to assist with all aspects of this new organization's development. Migrant Farmworkers Project, Part-time Fall Volunteer. The Migrant Farmworkers Project in Lafayette County, Missouri, is looking for a social service volunteer. Job duties are varied. During the fall, the Project provides social and legal services to a population of approximately 400 farmworkers and their families who come to Missouri to harvest apples. The majority of workers are Mexican or Mexican American and speak Spanish only. The Fall Project Volunteer should be self-motivating, fluent in Spanish, and willing to work irregular hours. The volunteer will earn $5.00 an hour. This is a stipendary volunteer position, not employment. No social security number is required. Foreign students are eligible to work for the Project. Rosario Cabrera, 1901-1975, Mexic-Arte Museum, March 13-April 18, 1998-This mysterious artist, now rediscovered, played an important role in the development of Mexican art during the twenties through her work in painting and drawing, as well as through her work as a teacher in later years. The exhibit features original paintings and drawings.
