AnnouncementFirst Annual Festival of New Latin American Cinema, April 29-May 2, Dobie Theater, 2021 Guadalupe. Cine Las Americas announces the first of an annual festival dedicated entirely to Latin American cinema in Austin. Six new feature-length films from across Latin America will be screened. All screenings are regional premiers. Films will be presented by local Latin American film experts and are screened in the original language with English subtitles. Fellowships and Research Opportunities
Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship: Latin American Studies Research Librarian, 1998-99, Duke University Center for International Library Programs. Up to two twelve-month fellowships per year are being offered to recent Ph.D.'s in any field of Latin American studies who wish to pursue careers as Latin American library specialists. Fellows will gain hands-on knowledge of collection development and public service work. Each fellowship for 1998-99 is $37,750 (twelve months, full-time), plus benefits. Call for Applications-Environmental Conflict Resolution in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region. The Ford Foundation/Udall Center Fellowship Program at Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy, University of Arizona, announces the first year of funding for research fellows-in-residence to study environmental conflict resolution (ECR) in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Applications are invited for the academic year 1998-99 for one fellowship, which will include a stipend of $23,000, a private office, and a half-time graduate student assistant, along with some operational support for communications, supplies, and secretarial services. Among other requirements, fellows will be expected to participate in the center's activities, teach a seminar, give lectures, and prepare a ms. for publication. The 1998-99 competition is open to university faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and other scholars with research interests in conflict resolution related to the environment, natural resources, or land use in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Each applicant is requested to submit: (1) brief statement describing policy research interests in general, (2) plans for a specific prject to be undertaken as a Ford Foundation/Udall Center Fellow (not to exceed five pages), (3) a C.V., and (4) two letters of reference. In addition, applicants need to specify the semester for which they are applying (Fall 1998, Spring 1999, or no preference). The Texas Fund for Training Foreign Policy Professionals (TFTFPP) has funds available through the National Security Education Program (NSEP) to send graduate students abroad for fieldwork and/or language study in Arabic-speaking nations, Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, China, Czech Republic, India, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, South Korea, and Turkey. There is no deadline for the application; fellowships will be awarded on a rolling basis. C. B. Smith Postdoctoral Fellowship 1998-99 Competition. The Mexican Center of UT-Austin, through its C. B. Smith Sr. funds and other private donations, offers from 10 to 15 travel awards to researchers having already obtained a Ph.D. and who are members of faculties of Mexican universities or advanced Mexican research centers, and want to come to Austin to make use of the academic and library resources available at the University of Texas. In terms of researchers with advanced rank in administrative bodies of Mexican museums of art, the professional title may be substituted for the doctorate. These travel awards consist of up to $1,000 (U.S.) for the reimbursement of transportation and lodging costs. Deadline for submission: May 1, 1998. Calls for Papers-The Yale Latin American & Iberian Journal is now accepting submissions for its Spring/Summer 1998 issue from undergraduates, graduates, and faculty. The staff of the journal will accept original submissions of literary compositions and scholarly research articles of moderate length (up to 6,000 words). Pieces written in English, Spanish, and Portuguese will be considered. Rosario Cabrera, 1901-1975, Mexic-Arte Museum, March 13-April 18, 1998-This mysterious artist, now rediscovered, played an important role in the development of Mexican art during the twenties through her work in painting and drawing, as well as through her work as a teacher in later years.
