Third Palenque Round Table, Palenque, Mexico, June 28-July 4, 1999. This meeting will be dedicated to the noted epigrapher and UT professor Linda Schele. Fellowships, Grants, and Research Opportunities

FLAS: Academic Year 1999-2000 Foreign Language and Area Study Fellowship for Portuguese language study only. To be eligible an applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, show potential for superior academic a chievement as indicated by grade-point average, class rank, and GRE score, demonstrate a long-term interest in Latin America, be a graduate student in good standing at UT-Austin, or have been accepted for regular admission to the Graduate School at UT-Aus tin. The applicant must not be a native speaker of Portuguese. More information and application instructions available in SRH 1.301. Deadline: March 1.

FLAS: Summer 1999 Foreign Language and Area Study Fellowship for Portuguese language study at UT-Austin or Kaqchikel language

study through Tulane. Eligibility requirements same as for the academic year FLAS. The ILAS application is for the FLAS fellowships. Contact Brian Stross (471-4206) for details about admission into the Tulane Kaqchikel program. Applicat ions available in SRH 1.301. Deadline: March 1, 1999.

Liberal Arts College-Wide Competitive Scholarships. Applications available for the 1999-2000 academic year ranging from $500-$2,000. Eligibility criteria: College of Liberal Arts undergraduate; completion of a minimum of 30 hours of coursework for a grade at UT-Austin; GPA of at least 3.7; evidence of achievement in leadership and service to the college and community. Applications available at ILAS (SRH 1.304A) or Liberal Arts (FAC 1). For more info., call Priscilla Ebert, 475-7586. Submission deadline: March 1, 1999, no later than 5:00 p.m.

Dissertation Research Grant for dissertation field research in Latin America. Applicant must be advanced to candidacy before funds can be disbursed. Funds will be available academic year 1999-2000. Stipend: $2,500. Applications avai lable in SRH 1.301. Deadline: March 1, 1999. Tinker Field Research Grants only to cover travel costs for brief periods of predissertation field research in Latin America, Portugal, or Spain. (Latin America here is defined as the S panish- and Portuguese-speaking countries of the Western Hemisphere.) The focus of the research is to reflect primarily the Tinker Foundation's broad areas of interest, i.e., economic policy and governance, environmental policy and those targeted social s cience disciplines having strong public policy implications. Individual recipients may be graduate students at both M.A. and Ph.D. levels. The Tinker Field Research Grants are not to be used for dissertation research, but rather to provide graduate studen ts with their first experience in developing independent research projects and conducting hands-on field research in Latin America or Iberia. Applications are available in SRH 1.301. Deadline: March 1, 1999.

Summer 1999 Library Travel Grants. The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida offers grants that enable researchers from other U.S. universities to use the resources of the Latin American Collection of UF lib raries. Three awards of up to $750 each to cover travel and living expenses of faculty members and graduate students. To apply, send a letter of intent, brief library research proposal, travel budget, and a C. V. to: Dr. Martha E. Davis, Associate Directo r, Center for Latin American Studies, P.O. Box 115530, University of Florida, 319 Grinter Hall, Gainesville, FL 32611-5530. Applications must be postmarked by March 15, 1999.

The Mexican Center of ILAS offers travel awards to Ph.D. researchers who are faculty members of Mexican universities or advanced research centers to enable them to use the academic and library resources of UT-Austin. For researchers with advanced rank on the staff of Mexican art museums, the professional title may be substituted for the doctorate. Up to $1,000 U.S. is available for reimbursement for expenses incurred in transportation, lodging, and meals.
