Challenges for Brazil: A Dialogue, Feb. 25, 2000, University
of California, Berkeley. A public forum will be hosted by
the Center for Latin American Studies featuring Brazil's first
lady, Dr. Ruth Cardoso; Jose Serra, Brazilian Minister of Health;
Paulo Renato Souza, Brazilian Minister of Education; and other
prominent policymakers from Brazil and the U.S. The conference
will address global economic integration in the Americas with
topics such as: the impact of globalization on Brazil; perspectives
on labor in the Americas; and social problems and political alternatives.

New Economic and Social Perspectives on Brazil. International
Faculty Development Seminar to Brazil, May 30-June 7, 2000. Nine-day
seminar begins in São Paulo (three nights), continues
to Parati (two nights), and ends in Rio de Janeiro (three nights).
It is designed for U.S. faculty and administrators in an effort
to stimulate the study of Brazil through lectures, faculty interchange,
and coordinated site visits. Fee of $1,995 includes seminar costs,

Earl N. Phillips Jr. Distinguished Professorship in International
Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The
Phillips Professor will hold a tenured position in an appropriate
dept. as well as a joint appointment in the newly designed Curriculum

FELLOWSHIPS, GRANTS, AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Bi-National Business Grants to Mexico. The U.S.-Mexico
Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange offers 15 grants
of tuition and stipend for U.S. students to pursue studies in
business, law, and/or engineering while interning at Mexico-based
corporations. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, have a B.S./B.A
. in engineering, accounting, business, law, or economics and/or
an M.S./M.A. in business or international business administration,
international relations, or economics from a U.S. university,
a minimum of two years' U.S. experience in business, and proficiency
in Spanish. Students will live and work in Mexico from Sept.
2000-June/July 2001 and take two graduate-level courses per trimester
(two nights per week) while working 9:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M. five

Joint Research Fellowship and Visiting Professorship, John

are invited from established scholars who are citizens of Spain
and Spanish America for one semester during the 2000-2001 academic
year. The fellow will conduct research at the Library and will
teach, in Spanish at Connecticut College, one course pertinent
to the fellow's research and appropriate for undergraduate students
majoring in Hispanic Studies. Stipend for the semester is $10,000

Summer Faculty Grants, David Rockefeller Center for Latin
American Studies, Harvard University. Two awards of up to
$3,000 will be made to help cover traveling and living expenses
of faculty members from nonresearch universities in the United
States, to use the resources of the Latin American library collections
at Harvard. Awardees are expected to carry out their research
at Harvard for at least two weeks between June 1-Aug. 31, 2000.
