CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Rio Branco Visiting Resource Professor. Any regular UT
faculty member may nominate a Brazilian university professor for
Spring 2001. Whoever fills the position will be required to give two
lectures in a regular UT graduate course and make a presentation in
the Brazil Center Speaker Series. Proposals should include a
description of the nominee's program at UT, a justification in terms
of the professor's contribution to UT's teaching program and
potential for future collaboration with Brazilian universities, the
time period at UT, a proposed budget, and a vitae. Eligible expenses
include airfare, hotel, per diem, and honorarium, with a total cost
not to exceed $4,000. The UT faculty member making the nomination
will be expected to organize the program for the Rio Branco VRP in

College Park, Maryland, Oct. 26-28, 2000. A gathering of language
and media professionals, authors, linguists, diplomatic representatives
and international organizations, with three main objectives: to improve
the understanding of the role of Romance languages and their effect on
U.S. society; to study economic, political, sociological, demographic,
educational, linguistic and pedagogical issues from a development perspective;
to design strategies that promote and provide incentives for the instruction of

EMPLOYMENT AND INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Assistant Professor of Spanish, University of Lethbridge,
Alberta, Canada. A probationary, tenure-track position beginning July
1, 2001. Requirements are a Ph.D. in Spanish with specialization in
Latin American literature or culture and civilization, near-native
fluency in Spanish and English, experience teaching Spanish as a
second language at the postsecondary level, and a strong commitment
to and appropriate record of scholarship and original research.

EXHIBITS
Viaje a Zacatecas, a photographic exhibit by John Christian,
Dobie-Paisano Fellow, will be on view at the Museo Goitia, Zacatecas,
Mexico, through Nov. 3. The collection is the culmination of a
10-year effort to document the states of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, and

FELLOWSHIPS, GRANTS, AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Presentation on National Security Education Program (NSEP)
Graduate International Fellowships, which enable U.S. graduate
students to pursue specialization in area studies and language, or
add an important international dimension to their education. Enuice
Blavascunas, a UT alum and the program associate for NSEP at the
Academy for Educational Development, will discuss the NSEP
opportunities and application process on Wednesday, October 25, in
the Study Abroad Office, SHC 247. Meetings are scheduled 9:00-10:30
