Wednesday, March 7-Alan West, professor at Northeastern University and winner of the 1997 Latino Poetry Prize, will give a presentation on his recent poetry and self-translations. West is the author of Tropics of History, a book on contemporary Cuban literature and history, the translator of Alejo Carpentier's La Música en Cuba, and is an expert on the works of Virgilio Piñera. 12:00, Tobin Room, Batts 210. Wednesday, March 7-Ester Shapiro, of the Univ. of Massachusetts at Boston and the Boston Women's Collective, will speak on her experience coordinating and promoting the Spanish translation of Our Bodies, Ourselves, the national bestseller that underwent a makeover to appeal to U.S. Latin American women. Thursday, March 8-Refrigerate after Opening, a series of self-portraits by Cuban photographer Cirenaica Moreira that reinvent popular fables with an ironic twist, often undercutting romantic images of femininity with sarcastic humor.
