Peru:
The largest hydroelectric plant in
Peru will be given in concession

September 4, 1998

Alberto Pandolfi, head of the Peruvian Cabinet, announced in early September in Congress that the operations of the largest hydroelectric plant in Peru will be given in concession to local or foreign investors, thereby beginning the last phase of the privatization process of the government of President Alberto Fujimori. The Peruvian State will maintain ownership of the assets of the Santiago AntĂșnez de Mayolo hydroelectric plant but the responsibility for its operation will be transferred to a private operator by means of an international bid.

In this phase of the process the plan is to grant concessions to the private sector covering ports, airports, dozens of hydroelectric plants, roads and sanitation-related companies. The Peruvian privatization process began in 1992 and, to date, more than 150 State-owned companies have been transferred to the private sector generating income of more than 8 billion dollars for the government and investment commitments in excess of 7 billion dollars over the next few years.
