UTA/UNITAR campus on international
trade
Organized jointly with the University of
Texas at Austin and in cooperation with the
World Trade Center (WTO)
United Nations Headquarters,
New York
Introduction to the Campus
Diplomats in multilateral settings are increasingly required to deal with
the complex issue of international trade. The University of Texas at
Austin (UTA) and UNITAR have therefore jointly launched the annual
UTA/UNITAR trade campus series. The objective of the campus is to provide
an intensive and in-depth programme addressing international trade issues
of particular importance to the delegations based in New York.
Objectives for the 1999
Campus
In response to the feedback and evaluation received from the 1998
campus, in 1999 the UTA/UNITAR trade campus will mainly focus on the
following issues: Trade in Services, Regional and Multilateral Trade
Agreements and Dispute Settlement Mechanisms. The campus aims to provide
delegates with state-of-the-art knowhow on matters relevant to
international trade and the laws that govern them, and give them a
hands-on opportunity to develop their negotiating skills.
Organization
The campus will offer a combination of lectures and case studies, with
input from practitioners and academics in the respective areas. It will
include simulation exercises for dispute-settlement mechanisms. The
programme is intensive, requiring the active participation and
involvement of all the participants. Certificates will be awarded to
participants who complete the course.
