Introduction to the Series
The United Nations University (UNU) and UNITAR annually organize a series
of seminars and workshops to provide delegates in New York with skills
and understanding of issues related to sustainable development, in
particular the linkages between policy and practice.
Objectives and Organization of
Session I
The WTO High-Level Meeting on trade liberalization and measures to
safeguard the environment, to be held on 15 and 16 March, is expected to
set the agenda for the ministerial meeting in November, and start off the
Millennium Round of Trade Negotiations. The objectives of the UNU/UNITAR
workshop are to provide a debriefing on, and analysis of, the main
results of this meeting in March. The workshop also aims to identify the
issues for the next trade round such as Multilateral Environmental
Agreements (MEAs) and WTO, participation of civil society, eco-labeling
etc., and their implication on all societies. It will also provide an
in-depth analysis of selected WTO cases of dispute on trade and
environmental issues.
