Introduction

The Miguel Bolaños Cacho Papers were donated to the Benson Latin American Collection in 1986 by Grace Ann and R. H. Woodruff, and were described by the Benson's Mexican Archives Project in July 1994. The papers are in Spanish; their physical extent comprises eight linear feet.

The suggested citation for the papers is "Miguel Bolaños Cacho Papers, 1885-1949, Benson Latin American Collection, General Libraries, University of Texas at Austin."

Biographical Sketch

Lawyer, public official, and author of legal and literary works. Born 1869 in Oaxaca, Mexico; died 1928 in San Diego, California. Became a lawyer in 1899. Positions held in Mexico include governor of Oaxaca (1902, 1912-1914), representative to the National Congress for two terms (1902-), supreme court justice (1904-), senator (1906-1908), and federal judge (1898, 1903-1905). Bolaños Cacho moved to the United States circa 1915 but continued to handle legal cases in northern Mexico through 1927. Publications include Sonetos y sonatas and Los derechos del hombre.

Scope and Contents Note

Legal files, personal business records, correspondence, literary productions, printed material, photographs, and scrapbooks from the professional and personal activities of Miguel Bolaños Cacho. Legal files include case files, related correspondence, and other legal documents from lawsuits about land tenure, payment of debts, other civil matters, and a few criminal cases. Documentation of personal business and family affairs includes correspondence about Bolaños Cacho's private property, business interests, and family matters. Most correspondence with brother, Emilio Bolaños Cacho, relates to events during the Mexican revolution of 1910-1920 and associated problems with disposal of property. Also in Series II are legal documents pertaining to real estate, mining claims, and inheritance; records of a fishing business; financial documents of the San Luís Beltrán and Aguilera haciendas; inventories of Bolaños Cacho's private library; assorted financial and other documents; and Bolaños Cacho's obituaries.

Bolaños Cacho's literary activities are reflected in literary productions and associated correspondence, and his publishing activities in printed material, correspondence, drafts, and financial documents. Records of his political career, mostly concerning the state of Oaxaca, include correspondence; laws and regulations; and periodicals. Scrapbooks contain clippings about his political and literary activities. Photographs and portraits are of Bolaños Cacho and family members. In Subgroup II, papers of wife, María Maceyra de Bolaños Cacho, and other family members include correspondence, legal and financial documents, and printed material relating to family matters and estate business, and artwork.
