Introduction

The Carlos García y Arriaga Papers form part of the Genaro García Collection, which was purchased by the University of Texas in 1921 from the heirs of Genaro García. The papers were described by the Benson's Mexican Archives Project in December 1994.

The papers consist of 32 items, in Spanish; they are also available on microfilm.

The following guide is available in Rare Books Reference: Castañeda, Carlos E. and Jack Autrey Dabbs, eds., Guide to the Latin American Manuscripts in the University of Texas Library. Cambridge, Mass., Harvard University Press, 1939.

The papers contain several proclamations or addresses by Agustín de Iturbide, as well as a few letters about his elevation to emperor and his death; several letters about and from Lorenzo de Zavala pertaining to Mexican political affairs (two letters attributed to de Zavala are addressed to Manuel Gómez Pedraza); and four letters to García from José Manuel Herrera about Iturbide and political affairs. Other items in the papers include an 1822 protest of the imprisonment of deputies to the national congress, an 1832 peace pact between Nicolás Bravo and Juan Alvarez, an 1832 proposal of the Zacatecan congress for the election of a new national congress, and a contemporary copy of the terms of the Mexican surrender of San Antonio in 1835.
