Introduction

The Juan E. Hernández y Dávalos Collection was purchased by the Benson Latin American Collection in 1943 from the heirs of Fernando González. The collection was described by the Benson's Mexican Archives Project in April 1994.

The physical extent of the collection comprises eight linear feet. The materials are in Spanish; their bulk dates are 1811-1831. The Manuscripts subgroup is also available on microfilm.

The following guide is available in Rare Books Reference: Castañeda, Carlos Eduardo and Jack Autrey Dabbs, Calendar of the Juan E. Hernández y Dávalos manuscript collection, Editorial Jus, Mexico, 1954. An item list and card file are also available for the Printed Material subgroup.

Biographical Sketch

Mexican collector, bibliophile, and publisher of documents relating to Mexican independence. Born 1827 in Aguascalientes, Mexico; died 1893. Published "Colección de documentos para la historia de la guerra de independencia de Mexico de 1808 a 1821."

Organization and Arrangement Note

Documents are organized into two subgroups, Manuscripts (1692-1865) and Printed Material (1811-1886), and arranged according to a numeric system superimposed on a chronological arrangement.

Scope and Contents Note

The collection is composed of manuscripts and printed material relating primarily to the Mexican independence movement, but also pertaining to conditions in Mexico at the end of the eighteenth century, the empire of Agustín Iturbide, the establishment of the republic, and Mexico's governance and foreign relations, especially with England, France, Spain, and the U.S. Many historical figures of Mexico are represented in the collection.

The Manuscripts subgroup, in which over half of the items date from 1820 to 1825, includes letters, descriptions of battles, records of insurgents' trials, military service records, documents concerning the conspiracy of Manuel Reyes, the archives of General José de la Cruz, many personal papers of José Mariano Michelena, and material gathered by Carlos María Bustamante to document the independence movement.

The Printed Material subgroup, in which the bulk of the items are dated 1822-1823, contains among its pamphlets and broadsides many literary productions, such as manifestos, speeches, odes, poetry, sermons, and pastoral letters, as well as decrees, circulars, and proclamations. Most items in Printed Material pertain to independence, the empire of Iturbide, and the early days of the republic.
