Antonio Margil de Jesús Collection

Introduction

The Antonio Margil de Jesús Collection forms part of the Genaro García Collection, which was purchased by the University of Texas in 1921 from the heirs of Genaro García. The collection was described by the Benson's Mexican Archives Project in January 1994.

The physical extent of the collection is one inch. Its materials are in Spanish, with the exception of item G89-17 which is in Latin. The collection is also available on microfilm.

Biographical Sketch

Franciscan friar. Born 1657 in Valencia, Spain; died 1726 in the convent of San Francisco de México. Entered the Franciscan order in 1673; ordained to the priesthood in 1682; sent to the missions of the Sierra Gorda, Querétaro, in 1683. Instrumental in the founding of Spanish missions in Texas.

Scope and Contents Note

Letters and petitions, literary productions, and printed material related to the life and work of Margil de Jesús. Letters and petitions concern minor affairs of the Colegios de Santa Cruz de Querétaro and Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Zacatecas. Literary productions are comprised of (1) Diario derrotero de la jornada á la provincia de los Tejas, desde el río grande del norte, hecho por orden de exmo. sor. Duque de Linares ... , (2) Instructio. Ad conficiendam inquisitionem appostolicam, ne perean probationes super virtutibus ac miraculis in specie venerabilis servi dei Antonii Margil in civitate mexicana (G89-17 Ms.), (3) Formulario de missionar, que hizo, y dictó N.V.P. Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesús (G168 Ms.), (4) Decreto sobre las virtudes en grado heroico de Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesús, (5) research and bibliographic notes. Printed material consists of three engravings of Margil de Jesús; on the verso of one is a list entitled, "Documentos pertenecientes á los venerables restos del muy rev. padre Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesús, Abril de 1855." Included in miscellaneous documents is a copy of the baptismal entry for Margil de Jesús.

Subgroups and Series

The Antonio Margil de Jesús Collection was arranged into Archives and Manuscripts subgroups by earlier library staff. Series were created by the staff of the Mexican Archives Project, which completed processing of the collection in January 1994. Materials in the Archives subgroup are arranged chronologically within folders; items in the Manuscripts subgroup are shelved according to manuscript number. The subgroups and series are:
