Introduction

The Mariano Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia Collection, which forms part of the Genaro García Collection, was purchased by the University of Texas in 1921 from the heirs of Genaro García. The collection was described by the Benson's Mexican Archives Project in December 1994.

The physical extent of the collection is eight inches. The materials are in Spanish; their bulk dates are 1747-1776. The collection is also available on microfilm.

The following guide is available in Rare Books Reference: Castañeda, Carlos E. and Jack Autrey Dabbs, eds., Guide to the Latin American Manuscripts in the University of Texas Library. Cambridge, Mass., Harvard University Press, 1939.

Scope and Contents Note

Contained in both subgroups are literary productions, official documents, and assorted material relating to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to the history of Mexico and the Catholic Church to 1771. The bulk of the material pertains to the history of churches, convents, schools, hospitals, and recogidas (homes designed to remove "scandalous" women from the streets) in Mexico City and Puebla. Most of the official documents refer to the founding of the institutions mentioned above and are probably 18th-century copies of 16th and 17th-century originals. Materials in the Archives subgroup are entitled, "Discursos académicos y papeles sobre Puebla." Included among Manuscripts are histories of old churches, convents, and schools of Mexico City, filed as G12; news of Mexico City (G13); notes about Puebla (G14); a list of mayors of Puebla from 1531-1747 (G17); a manuscript entitled, "Concordia de Puebla," concerning that agreement and the founding of convents in Puebla (G111); notes about the Colegio de San Luis (G117) and San Pablo de Dominicos (G126); lectures about church history (G172); a prologue to Veytia's História antigua de México (G173); a bill and report concerning the cost of three containers for sacred oils (G181); a draft manuscript of Baluartes de México: Descripción histórica de las quatro milagrosas imágenes de Nuestra Señora (G221); and a speech about the four gospels (G282) . Annotations on some of the papers are signed with the initials F.P.T. and are dated 1886.
