Youth, Education, and Juvenile Justice-Perspectives from the U.S. and Brazil

November 14-15, 2005

Scholars and practitioners from Texas and Rio Grande do Sul will discuss youth and juvenile justice, with an emphasis on delinquency rehabilitation, education, and prevention. The symposium presents a forum in which to examine e the international area of adjudicated youth and youth at risk. It is part of an ongoing collaboration between U.S. and Brazilian universities and community agencies.

Presentations will include an overview of the juvenile justice systems in the U.S. and Brazil and discussion of varied education and prevention efforts, legal policy implications, and rehabilitation programs in the two countries. As these vary greatly within each country, the focus will be on the states of Texas and Rio Grande do Sul.

The conference is hosted by the School of Social Work and co-sponsored by the Brazil Center, Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, and School of Law of The University of Texas at Austin, Texas Youth Commission, Texas Juvenile Probation Commission, School Education, School of Social Work, and School of Law of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, and by the CAPES, Brazilian Ministry of Education.
